What is an implant?

A dental implant is a metal post that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. An artificial tooth(crown) is placed on an extension of the post(abutment) on the implant. This represents the missing tooth.

How long does the implant procedure take?

Normally one(1) hour per tooth.

How is the implant treatment done?

The tooth to be replaced will be extracted and a metal post that replaces the root portion of the missing tooth inserted. A temporary tooth will be inserted on an extension of the post.  There is then a period of three(3) to four(4) months for the gum to heal. When the gum has sufficiently healed a permenant artificial tooth(crown) will replace the temporary tooth(crown)

In which case is an implant necessary?

A dental implant is an alternative to dentures or bridgework.

Is it possible to have implants in all teeth?

Absolutely.

Oral care after implant?

Good oral hygiene is essential to successful healng.

The dentist will usually prescribe a chlorhexidine mouthwash. The day after surgery, warm salt water rinses should be used 4 to 5 times a day, particularly after meals.

Post implant nutrition?

For the first couple of days after surgery, it’s beneficial to have an all liquid meal diet if possible. Examples: smooth soups, home cooked broths, meal replacement drinks, protein drinks, fruit smoothies and various juices.

 

Smoking and drinking alcohol after implant surgery?

After implant surgery,do not drink alcohol for 72 hours while the body is healing and recovering, drink in moderation afterwards. It is recommended to abstain from smoking at least 1 or 2 weeks prior to the implant procedure.

What material is the implant made of?

Titanium is crucial for dental implants as it is non-toxic durable and very light. The titanium acts as a relacement root of the tooth and usually lasts for 30 years.

Is there an age limit for implant applications?

There is no age limit for dental implants. 

Is it possible to  use an implant for life?

With proper oral hygiene care, dental implants can last for decades or a lifetime.

Why should implants rather than bridges be preferred? 

Essentially dental implants are more durable and longer lasting than bridges making them more affordable, which have a lifespan averaging about 8 years and require specilized care.
